This is a futuristic dystopian thriller, from what I have gleaned from the preview. I will admit, I am not always the biggest fan of dystopian novels, especially when the fear of our future makes me anxious. Johnson does a good job of crafting a desolate world as soon as you enter, with a backstory that makes me want to learn more. Her use of Latin to form the different character names and worldbuilding was not wasted on me, as I quite enjoyed those literary nuggets. The story is intriguing, luring you forward to wonder if Andra will find happiness, and if her companions are trustworthy. If you are a fan of futuristic novels and aren't anxious about our future, this will be a good read for you.
However, I did have some personal problems with the novel. I felt the beginning, while strong for transferring feeling to the reader, was lacking in complex worldbuilding. But the item that caused me the most irritation was the language that Andra's companions speak. While I understand its use in conveying different parts of the text, it reads in a very clunky and stilted fashion. I stumbled over the words, trying to figure out what exactly the companions were saying. This might have been the intention of the author, but it nonetheless caused me some irritation as I just wanted to be able to understand and grasp the conversations.
