Wow. A gripping start to a great premise

I began this book thinking, "okay, it's well written and has a good plot" and then it went a whole new direction as soon as the POV changed! I thought Johnson was clever but she created a whole new pidgin English that represents the language of the future we enter with the main character. And then she had the male lead narrating the story in this piecemeal language. It is brilliant. I wasn't sure I would want to read the whole book before reading the excerpt, but now I want to know all the mysteries of their world! Who are the other Goddesses? What happened in the past thousand years? What is Zhade up to? So many emotions and I'm hooked on both the characters and the plot!
