A riveting opening
This has the setting of an experienced writer well adapted to his environment. The first scene is a riveting experience. A young boy gets to see a private party for the first time. Normally I would have wanted the scene to be a bit bigger than a private party. For example, Wilbur Smith could have started the scene with the boy and his sister facing a tiger in the jungle of Bengal.
I also found that Smith could have improved upon his setting. Indian Sun could also have been improved into a metaphor. I found that the opening does indeed achieve a cinematic experience and the dialogue is excellent. I was immersed in this time period, and I sincerely would love to read this entire novel. Well done!
