Wow. What a stunner. Within the first three pages I already knew that I was hooked. I don’t think I’ve ever read such a hard-hitting, addicting prologue.

Page after page, I was drawn in to a complex, rich world of magic and war. Legrand takes the legends of angels and the complexity of religion, and weaves it into a page-turning story line that explores the breadth of friendship, family, and the impact our decisions make.

Following the two stories of Rielle and Elianna was downright addicting. I enjoy split POV stories, and Furyborn did them well. I personally had a favorite, Rielle, who enchanted me from the beginning even though the prologue shows us another side of the queen. Her trials were blood pumping and her keen wit and joy easily made her my favorite character.

While Rielle was my favorite, I definitely enjoyed Elianna–who gives off a Calaena Sardothian vibe–while her true shining quality is her love for her family, which humanizes her. I enjoyed getting to see them both grow as characters. The rest of the cast was well detailed out and truly made the book, however I enjoyed the book so well that I can’t possible list out everything or we’d be here all day.

To me one of the small hiccups in a truly killer novel, was the pacing near the end. To me this was most prominent in Elianna’s POV, even though both seemed to pick up pace. For the last maybe 1/8 of the book it seemed as the reader was running out of time, or pages, and parts that desperately needed to be included in the book didn’t have time to fully develop. Which to me, rushed the pacing of the stories.

The world building was well done, from the court customs to the larger empire, I enjoyed getting to learn about the world. Especially when we see the world over a thousand years apart, it brings very different view points and a fresh element to the story telling.

I cannot wait to see what more has to come in the future books, and I am always eager to learn more, especially in relation to the interference of angels. They seemed to make the rules of magic misbehave, or perhaps since some of the characters are just learning what their magic can do, we aren’t privy to the true rules of magic.

I’m not sorry for the long review, this was one of my first reads of 2018, and it raised the bar for what I was expecting of this year. I have not been disappointed. This is will become a series that I know will be on my shelf for years to come. Action, mystery, magic, strong and loving women, intricate and real relationships, and an addictive writing style, Furyborn is everything you didn’t know you needed.
