My experience with fantasy is extremely limited, so I'm completely unqualified to talk about how this book fits in with the rest of the genre and what it can add to the genre as a whole. What I am qualified to say was that I found reading this book to be quite the pleasure. As someone who doesn't read much fantasy, I was intimidated somewhat by the length of this book as I expected it to be a bit of slog, burdened by detailed language and too much "magic" that wasn't comprehensible to me. Instead, I found that this book was incredibly engaging. Despite the length, I read it in a matter of hours. The alternating viewpoints between Rielle and Eliana worked well, as I felt that their voices were distinct, and while they were within the same "world", the environments they both lived in were different and well described. It's clear early on what the connection is between the characters, but watching them work out who they are individually and what they are capable of and their place in their worlds is so interesting.
Even if you are not a fantasy reader, I think readers who enjoy adrenaline fueled stories can appreciate this one. Now that I've read this one, I'm inspired now to maybe finally pick up some of the fantasy books that are sitting on my shelves!
