Furyborn is a fantastic start to a new fantasy series. The narrative switches between Rielle and Eliana, two women in the same world, 1000 years apart. Rielle, the Blood Queen, is just a fairytale character as far as Eliana is concerned, yet her story has some parallels to Eliana's life. Both women have strange powers, though Eliana is of a time when magic no longer exists, and both women have to fight against incredible odds to survive.
Both storylines were equally engaging, and they were different enough that it was never confusing when the viewpoints switched. In Rielle's time, she is forced to complete challenges to prove she is the prophesied Sun Queen. I'm really interested to see why and how she becomes the Blood Queen instead, but it seems that will be revealed deeper into the trilogy. Eliana is doing what she can to protect her family and survive the brutal rule of the Empire, and in doing so she's become, in her mind, a monster. When she teams up with the Wolf to try and rescue her missing mother, we begin to see hints of the humanity and empathy she has tried to bury.
All in all, this is the start of an epic fantasy, so there's A LOT going on in this novel. The world of Furyborn is well-developed and fascinating, and this story sucks you in and keeps you captivated until the end. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series; I can't wait to see where this story goes!
