This was such an interesting fantasy story, as it was told in two separate timelines from two different perspectives, over 1000 years apart. Rielle has to go through these elemental trials to prove that she is the fated Sun Queen, while much later, Eliana sets off with a rebel leader to rescue a princess and her kidnapped mother. The action was well paced in both timelines and it felt like literally every chapter ended on a cliffhanger for both girls, so you just wanted to keep going to get from one girl’s perspective to the other again and again. I thought that both girls had really distinct and shining personalities and even with the constant switching back and forth, I didn’t find myself getting confused or mixing up the characters. I think that if I had to choose, I would say that I did prefer Eliana’s chapters to Rielle’s, just because Rielle’s story started to get a little repetitive. It was just trial after trial after trial for most of the book with a little romance and politics tossed in every once in a while. Eliana’s adventures felt a lot more dynamic and compelling, and I was really Here for her conflicting relationship with Simon. The ending did get pretty confusing and I didn’t totally know what was going on because it got really into the politics of the world and I still didn’t understand what side everyone was on, how the angels really worked into things, and why the angels were so dangerous and separated from the humans in the first place. Although, that might have been explained and I just wasn’t reading closely enough. I’m really intrigued to continue with this series and learn more about how things unfold, especially from Rielle’s perspective in the past.
