I am not sure I am a fan of the first chapter, as I was looking for an explanation of the magic system and the world as a whole. Then it turns out it was a flash forward and not a true establishing point for the novel. I understand some very popular books have started this way, but such chapters are very brief - generally less than 5 pages.
I am intrigued, and very hopeful that the female characters in this book will get to shine. I also wonder if the contrast between the two queens will also be the classic "good vs evil" dichotomy.
