The two main characters, Rielle and Eliana, have alternating short chapters that make the reader fly though the book, serving to keep the tension high but the characterisation light. Certainly both girls are high emotion, high drama- more than anything, it was this that made this very-much-older-than-YA reader grimace a little. The story is also pretty love-heavy, even when such relationships aren't really necessary, and the chosen one/child who doesn't know who she really is tropes are not treated with any novelty
