When Kate and her husband were planning to get married they attended the typical pre-marital counseling sessions at the church. Kate remembers being asked a question that she, and many people, answer with giving much thought: what would you do if your child was born with a health or developmental issue?
This was just one of many questions and it was something she didn’t picture actually happening to her. But ultimately, after a hard time getting pregnant and a miscarriage, Kate gave birth to a son would would eventually be diagnosed with a nonverbal autism.

In this book Kate talks about having a second child and noticing them developing at a different pace than her first son.
She talks about the process of her son being diagnosed on the autism spectrum both educationally and medically. She was reluctant to attach any type of label to her Don. But she wanted to do what was in his best interest. She felt like the best way she could get him the help and assistance that he needed was to get him tested.

She talks about the strain put on her marriage. The ways her family adjusted and changed to accommodate her son’s needs.

She also offers advice and kind words for others going through this.

Kate might have answered the question without thinking when she went to pre-marital counseling, but she learned her answer over the years: she would always do whatever she thought was best for her son.

This story was very emotional. Kate is a strong woman.

I hope that I have used the correct terminology in my review. I have done my best to word it thoughtfully and carefully.

I won an early copy of this book on BookishFirst.
