As someone who has a sister with disabilities, it's always nice to see people document their similar stories. My parents never talked about their emotions upon discovering my sister's disability, but I can imagine it was a very difficult time for them. Much as Swenson discovered, having a family member who is uniquely special is an opportunity to look at life through the innocent eyes of someone that suffer the same breaking of spirit that the rest of us do. It is truly a gift.
