I. Adored. This. Book.
I went into this book blind—all I knew about it going in was that it was YA and by an Indigenous author. I had no idea it was a bit of a thriller, and I am so happy I didn’t, as I never would have reached for it had I known (goes to show it pays off to branch out). And I want to make it clear—it’s a THRILLER and NOT fantasy!!! I can’t tell you how many reviews I’ve seen where people brush off another culture as “fantasy.” It’s insensitive and inaccurate.
This book was so well written—I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I don’t typically like mystery/thriller books because 1) I am a weenie, and 2) I find that mysteries are typically disappointing because they are either too easy to guess or withhold important information until the very last minute and negate everything reader’s learned throughout the journey. But I didn’t find any issues with this one—I felt like the “bad guy” wasn’t super obvious, but also wasn’t too far fetched.
