Daunis is having a rough time. Her uncle has died, her grandmother has had a stroke and she's opted to stay in the area that has been home all her life to be close to the family that needs her. And things just get worse - and she just gets stronger. She gets roped into investigating a meth ring that appears to have its origins in the Ojibwe community that she's part of on her father's side. At any point this would be a lot to expect from an eighteen year old woman. And Boulley does a great job of making Daunis believable by not making her invincible. Daunis has her doubts about what she's doing, who she can trust (understandably so) and what her next steps should be. The book reflects the best and worst of a tight-knit community - people that use it to their own advantage and others that provide a support network to the generations that follow them. This is not a light read, there aren't happy endings for everyone and it covers a lot of difficult subjects, but the story is done so well that you want to keep going anyway. And last but not least, it's a beautiful dive into Native culture that addresses both the good and bad of the past and present, and gives the reader a peek into beautiful traditions and persistent prejudices.
