Daunis Fontaine is an 18-year-old Native American woman who grew up feeling like she never fit in in her community, since she is biracial (Ojibwe and Firekeeper). She is a witness to a murder involving a drug ring and then decides to go undercover to try to help her community from facing more tragedies because of this lethal drug.

This book is set in Sault Ste Marie/the U.P. of Michigan. I am a current Michigan resident, so this book hit home for me. I also appreciated the knowledge of culture that Boulley interspersed throughout the novel. I felt like I learnt so much about the Firekeeper and Ojibwe community that I really knew nothing about.

I listened to the audiobook version and the performer was just perfectly Daunis. Hearing her speak the Anishinaabemowin was so interesting and enjoyable to listen to. The thriller aspect kept me on my toes and I really had not seen the ending coming. Definitely one of the best books I have read this year. I will gladly read any book Boulley writes and cannot wait for the adaptation to film/TV!!
