There were several beautiful quotes from the book that I debated sharing to start off this review, but my favorite was actually an author’s note at the end: “I sought to write about identity, loss, and injustice … and also of love, joy, connection, friendship, hope, laughter, and the beauty and strength in my Ojibwe community.”

This sums up the book beautifully. Firekeeper’s Daughter was a beautiful and suspenseful story with a strong female lead. We get to be inside her head as she navigates the multiple facets of being biracial, figuring out where she truly fits within both of her communities. We get insight into her spiritual beliefs, her culture on both sides of the family, and how she feels about the prejudices that come from many of the people (even relatives) around her.

We are confronted with the best and worst aspects of her city, tribal life, and the mixed cultural heritage she grows up with. This book was beautiful, deep, suspenseful, and insightful. It was among my favorite reads of the year, and Boulley is an author I’ll be watching for in the future!
