I’ve seen this novel all over booksta with great reviews, so I had major FOMO and had to grab it from the library. I definitely see what the hype was all about and I was amazed it’s a debut given the complexities of the story and the believable and flawed characters. I absolutely loved getting a peak into the Ojibwa community and learning more about their rituals, history and the family relationships. I also loved the message of women supporting women which was prevalent throughout the book.

I did have some moments where it felt like a bit too much was being packed into one story and while some was used to drive the story forward, other events didn’t really seem to fit in to the plot and contributed very little toward the outcome of events. And this is just a personal preference for me, but I would rather not have the romance storyline which felt a little contrived and very angsty. It was also one of the reasons this felt very YA to me.

I think it would have been easier at the start of the book if there had been a character list and some basic info on each to help get to know them all. The characters are all well developed but I think if there were a few less people I could have focused on getting know more about each of the MCs. There are some major tigger warnings that I’ve included in the comments. Overall an enjoyable read with plenty of action to keep my interest. 4/5⭐️
