This story is unlike any other YA on the market. I love thrillers so I was looknig forward to this one plus I never read anything else by the author. There are so few Native American stories on the shelves it's nice to see one getting a voice. It follows Daunis, a half Ojibwe teenager, as she works with the FBI to investigate a lethal new drug, all the while managing her own emotional journey. It didn't gloss over the problems in the community from sexual assault, to drug and alcohol abuse and instead took them on with care. This book provides thoughtful explanations of tribal customs and how elders are respected I also like that the main character was biracial because she was able to explore both sides and perspectives of her identity. This was just a masterfully weaved together story swirling with pride. The short chapters keep this one fast flowing and that ending is bittersweet. Don't miss out on this wonderful book.
