“Maybe there is a word in Anishinaabemowin for when you find solid footing in the rubble after a tragedy.”

I worry I will have trouble finding solid footing in a good book after enjoying this one so thoroughly. Beautiful. Heart wrenching. Thrilling. In short: this story broke me in the best way possible.

Eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine witnesses a murder, upending her life in a way she never imagined possible, as she agrees to go undercover and insert herself directly in the heart of a criminal investigation. More deaths occur, and suddenly everything feels like it’s landing too close to home. Who can she trust?

I was stunned to find out this was Angeline Boulley’s debut novel, and just as shocked to find out it was classified YA. Boulley delivers a masterclass in “show don’t tell” and I am so happy to have learned so much about Native American culture throughout the entire book.

Do not sleep on this one. Propel it to the top of your TBR list!

“Keep our community strong. Our women safe. Our men whole. Our Elders laughing. And our children dreaming in the language. Thank you very much for this good life.”
