Firekeeper’s Daughter is an incredibly complex novel. There’s a lot going on with the plot and the characters but there’s also another level of background storyline that ties into each and every aspect of the book. I can see how some people may find this too complex or confusing and I agree, that maybe some storylines could be removed…but I think having them in doesn’t detract from the book at all.

The characters are really dynamic and well-built. You don’t get a history for each one, but they all still felt well-rounded. No one in this story has a clear-cut background that makes them either good or bad. It made it hard for me to fully like a character, but that felt true to real life so I didn’t hate it.

The actual storyline is incredibly captivating. I usually have a hard time getting sucked into fiction books on audio but I had a really hard time putting this one down. Often I found myself just sitting and listening to the story. While some aspects of the ending I was able to predict early on, it still played out in a surprising yet believable way. And I am 100% happy with where the author left the characters by the end.

I also really appreciated the way Angeline Boulley intertwined the culture of the area into the storyline and the book without coming off as teach-ey. It felt natural and I found myself learning a lot and enjoying what I was learning.

This was an amazing book to read and I really recommend it, especially if you enjoy a really juicy and captivating storyline.
