I loved everything about this book.
Daunis is a wonderful narrator. She’s incredibly intelligent, strong willed, and extremely interested in maintaining a connection with her culture. I was routing for her the entire time.

I also really enjoyed the focus on family, both direct relations and the larger community at the senior center. It’s really nice to see how people from different age groups interact in such a positive way. Daunis has a profound respect for her elders and wants to learn from them. At the same time, the elders want her to succeed and support her goals in every way they can.

Finally, the mystery/detective element is excellent. Daunis gets dragged into helping an investigation of drug dealers that are creating terrible problems for her community and other native communities. She uses her knowledge of local plant life and local traditions to put together the complex plan that underlines the drug manufacturer and dealings going on right under her nose. I didn’t want to put this book down!
