Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley is rich in world building and hits so many important details. The traditions, the culture, the language. I was mesmerized and completely taken with everyone in the book. It was a real experience that I throughly enjoyed. It is one of few books that recognize culture-rich communities and portray them truthfully and wholeheartedly. My heart felt broken while reading but at the same time so so full? This book tied me to its characters in a whole new way. There are so many issues on Anishinaabe people highlighted in this book that it makes it all the more relatable for the indigenous communities all over Turtle Island. I didn’t need to be apart of this community to feel connected to the characters and the valuable world, Boulley made me feel welcomed and empathetic. Additionally, while shedding light on important topics, the plot made me scream and spill what I was reading to anyone sitting next to me!
