Firekeeper's Daughter is a one of the most unique novels I have read in a long time. A tumultuous blend of native culture, hockey culture, and drug culture.
Daunais Fontaine is a strong main character with a family full of fierce love and buried secrets.
She was born a scandal, and things don't change much over time. Her father was a local high school hockey hero who died young, plagued by the after effects of poor choices. Daunais is grounded by the love of family and ties to the hockey community. The pervasive nature of sports becomes apparent from page one, and is the way that the "new guy in town" slides into Sault St. Marie easily.
Jamie Johnson is a walk on for their local amateur hockey team, and immediately accepted as part of the crowd despite his hazy background.
Daunais is naturally attracted to him, and a tentative relationship is formed.
But as time passes she finds that not all family is genuine and hockey has a dark side that, like an oil spill is rising to the top and smothering everything around it.
