This is one of the best YA thrillers I’ve ever read.

Set in Ste Sault Marie in Michigan’s upper peninsula, this book balances authentic characters with a fast paced and multilayered plot.

Unlike many thrillers that tend to sensationalize death and murder, author Angeline Boulley examines the ripple effects of the death that throws Daunis into an FBI investigation involving a meth ring in her community. She shines a light on pain and grief in the aftermath of a young person’s death.

I learned about the Ojibwe culture, too, and I have even more to learn, of course. Daunis is caught between two worlds, having a white mother and Ojibwe father. She feels like an outsider being unenrolled, but her connection to her Ojibwe heritage is strong.

The book also features a forbidden romance that is handled maturely and delicately. The mystery is the main event but the romance enhances the story and ups the stakes.

CW: murder-suicide, nightmares, addiction, grief, sexual assault
