When I saw that Firekeeper's Daughter centered around a Native American woman AND was a mystery thriller, I was prepared to love it. Some things that I did love about this book: The cover was stunning!! The Native American culture and community was wonderful to read about and I enjoyed learning about the Elders, tribal politics, and the Ojibwe traditions as a whole. It was refreshing to read this novel from a Native American author's perspective.

However the main character was not appealing to me; she was giving me the vibes of someone who was trying to be "not like other others" and I didn't appreciate her slut-shaming other girls and calling them "anglerfish". Her narrative and age also clashed, it didn't feel to me like she was a college student who graduated high school, she acted like a child many times. This book progressed very slowly for me and it took me a few days to really get into the plot. The romance and investigation itself didn't really interest me, it just felt kind of meh? However it did pick up in the last few chapters, but by then it was already too late for me to really feel anything.
