I went into this book not knowing very much about it other than the fact that it is written by a female indigenous author - I needed to read it for a prompt for a reading challenge. I was imagining some kind of fantasy story based on the cover, maybe something featuring exploring an indigenous girl's ancestry.

I couldn't have been more wrong. I was pleasantly surprised by the contemporary setting, and then once the character of Jamie was introduced, my interest was definitely piqued. A bit of romance! Though after a while, it felt a bit forced. Finally, once the main plot was revealed, it became a real page-turner for me.

This book is medium-paced in my opinion, with some very slow moments that allow us to learn more about Ojibwe traditions, beliefs and rituals, and some very fast-paced moments - mostly towards the end.

The main character Daunis is fairly likeable - she is opinionated, stubborn, and passionate. There were moments where I didn't really understand her train of thought though, like her initial reluctance to help out, and also her misplaced trust in certain family members. The ending was slightly predictable but still a great read, and I was glad with how some of the individual minor story lines turned out (particularly the slightly forced romance.)
