Daunis’ Native American community has dealt with racism, children being taken from their homes to “Americanize,” unemployment, alcoholism, and now drugs. When her friend is killed, Daunis begins to play a more active roll in trying to find the source in her community. I really enjoyed the close look at the culture and loved Daunis and her family. The story was well written. Scenes were described so the reader could feel themselves there in the moment. Even the dialogue helped to bring the reader in with a combination of English, various Native American languages, foreign languages, and slang. And not only did we get a mystery, but there was family drama, romance, and Daunis’ own coming of age story. The book kept me turning the page. Not just for the mystery, but because I liked the characters so much! For being such a long book, it felt like a quick read.
