I live for Young Adult novels. They offer a sense of escape which is a nice break from the real world. Boulley's novel, "Firekeeper's Daughter" is no exception. While the novel did follow a young lady on the brink of becoming a woman, the story didn't give me YA vibes. I felt as though many of the issues brought up within the book surpassed bring just for young adults. I believe this is a novel that folks of all ages can read, learn from, and appreciate.

The author did an amazing job of explaining the Ojibwe Indian culture, rituals, and even stereotypes without those things weighing down the story line. One of my favorite themes within the book was the acknowledgement of the importance of elders in our life. The elders in Daunis' circle were strong, intelligent, and supportive. I think the author also capture the essence of how hard it can be for any woman, but especially a young woman, to confront and admit to being assaulted. I felt for Danis' in that moment as well as many others. This book will definitely pull on your emotions, both happy and sad. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys exceptional writing.
