Firekeeper's Daughter book more than lives up to the beauty of its cover, which is saying something because the cover is absolutely stunning. Daunis is eighteen, super smart, a talented hockey player, deeply loyal, bi-racial, and stronger than any person should have to be as she tries to help solve the mystery of who is at the heart of the drugs infiltrating her community. As much as I adored her, this is more than a book about teenage sleuthing. There are so many layers to her story- cultural identity, community, family making it a much richer and more complex book than I was anticipating. Not every story line worked for me especially the unnecessary romance that I wish had been edited out. However in the end, I really loved this book. We may not even be halfway through the year but I know this will make my list of favorite books read in 2021.
