I finished this book and just leaned back and thought to myself "damn."

A complex story about fitting in where there isn't space for you, about the legal loopholes that serve solely to weigh down Indigenous communities, and about loving people despite. their flaws but also not letting that love obscure the danger (and hurt) that some flaws can bring.

As a white person, I really appreciated the way Boulley didn't feel the need to hold our hands when talking about our main character's heritage and traditions. That was an irrevocable part of the story but she didn't waste time explaining and breaking things down (and therefore "othering" what some readers might view as strange or different).

Boulley also didn't flinch away from giving us a hard look at issues that disproportionally affect Indigenous people in America and Canada. And showing us this through the eyes of a character so rich with empathy even while she experiences the pain first-hand was very powerful
