Eighteen-year-old Daunis’s mixed heritage has always made her feel like an outsider, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. When she witnesses a shocking murder, she reluctantly agrees to be part of a covert FBI operation into a series of drug-related deaths.

Firekeeper’s Daughter is a YA mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved Daunis’s character. Her love of her culture was so heartwarming, and illustrates the beauty of Ojibwe traditions that colonizers have tried to erase. This story shows the colonist/racist crap Indigenous people have to put up with. Every time Daunis heard a microaggresion or overt racial slur, my heart broke for her. The cover for this book is freaking stunning! I’m trying to find a physical copy—alas ones without that sticker seem to be not at any bookstores I go to.

I loved the mystery aspect of this. It was so interesting to see the different approaches to the mystery between Daunis and the FBI operatives. Daunis is such a caring person and I just wanted to give her a big hug and protect her?? I loved getting to know more about her throughout this journey, especially with all the different facets of her life: her cultural experiences/celebrations, her love of medicine and plants, her love of sports and exercise and so much more.

I wish this was a series. I would LOVE to see Daunis go off to university and continue to work on cases or something. IDK I just want more of her and to see her growing and helping her community.
