I have never read a book like this before and I don't think I ever will.
As a half-white, half native, Daunis has always done her best to honor her culture and its traditions. But things in the reservation become dark when a tragedy occurs and Daunis decides to help two undercover FBI agents as an informant to solve the meth problem plaguing her people and the surrounding areas. What she finds opens her eyes to those she thought she could trust and spirals into a gut-wrenching conclusion that will have you gaping.
FIREKEEPER'S DAUGHTER is a poem to the Ojibwe and Native Americans but does not gloss over the struggles they deal with even now in the US. Part of reading this book will be like a college class on Native American heritage. You will learn the customs and language that make up these incredible people.
This book comes off as a mystery slash thriller but has elements of romance. It does tackle some hard-hitting issues such as drugs, sexual assault, homophobia, guns, and murder. But at heart, it's a story about a girl torn between two worlds who is pushed to discover how much she is willing to sacrifice for her family.
