Firekeeper's Daughter is an excellent combination of Native culture and keep-you-guessing mystery. The main character, Daunis, is a former hockey player, future healthcare professional, about to begin her first year of college. When tragedy strikes, she ends up teaming up with someone unexpected to get to the bottom of a problem in her community that is actually more widespread than she knows.

This is a great book for mystery lovers, and is reminiscent of Veronica Mars at its best. The twists and turns will keep you guessing, and possibly increase your anxiety a bit. The uncovering of the bad guys comes in pieces and is less than obvious-hardcore mystery fans may have some accurate guesses, but in general there are enough surprises to keep you on your toes.

More than this, though, Firekeeper's Daughter is an excellent look at the customs and traditions of the Ojibwe people. Descriptions of the setting in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will make you want to visit the area. Daunis's experiences with dancing, powwows, native medicine, interactions with her elders, and more will paint a vivid, three dimensional picture of contemporary Ojibwe life.

I definitely recommend picking up this book ASAP!
