What a great start to a YA book! In just a few chapters, Boulley transports readers to the U.P. of Michigan and immerses them in Daunis' life which straddles the cultures of her white French Canadian mother and Ojibwe father. English, French, and Ojibwe languages are woven together as they would be in Daunis' community, and Boulley respects that readers will pick up meaning the way actual visitors to the community would.

Also, the depiction of the junior hockey team and its players is quite realistic--my family have been billets for USHL players so we know first-hand what it's like.

And the cliffhanger!!!!! Who was shot? What will happen next? I *need* to read the rest of this book!

Finally, as a school librarian, I am always looking for new #ownvoices authors whose books will expand my students understanding of the world. My first impression of Firekeeper's Daughter is that this book would be perfect for that aim. And the students will take a look at the beautiful, intriguing book cover and hear my booktalk and will be drawn right in.
