“Kindness is something that seems small, Daunis, but it’s like
tossing a pebble into a pond and the ripples reach further than you
thought.”

This was such an interesting and emotionally compelling excerpt to read. Daunis is caught between two halves of her family, both with incredibly different expectations/legacies to live up to Her father was a Firekeeper (Ojibwe hockey star who raised yet another hockey star) and her mother a Fontaine (extremely rich French family who want her to attend medical school).

Life would be difficult enough learning to balance these two identities and decide her own future, but when she's dragged into a horrifying situation brought on by an old friend? I am incredibly intrigued to find out what is next for Daunis in this story. One of my favorite plot devices is also when you read foreshadowing, have no idea what it means, only to read it later in horror, so that was thrilling!
