I'm struck upon my first glimpse of this book by the many dualities presented to the reader. Daunis lives half in a world of her affluent family half in the culture of her Ojibwe tribe, half in what she deems the regular world and half in what she's labeled the hockey world. While she tries to maintain these distinct realms I can't help but feel that perhaps we're meant to lulled into a false sense of complacency- almost like a metaphoric cocooned state. In waiting for this carefully constructed world to shatter we are provide with hints of discontent that threaten to tear Dauny's world down. I'm both terrified and interested to see where this story goes. I believe this will be a story of strength in the face of emotional turmoil and a much needed lesson in identity, culture, and community for a culture that is underrepresented in the literary world.
