While I wouldn’t describe this book as “unputdownable” it was an interesting story of one man’s love for the animals at the Mosul Zoo. Abu Laith, which translates to “Father of Lions”, is determined to provide care for the zoo animals, especially Zombie, a lion he raised and trained since he was a cub, during the two and a half years of the ISIS occupation.

I don’t read a lot of nonfiction but feel like I learned a lot about the people of the Mosul region, their struggles, their culture and their will to survive.

While reading, I googled Abu Laith, and while I didn't learn anything that wasn't in the book, I did a find a picture of this amazing man and he's exactly how I pictured him while reading.

I received an advanced copy of this book; all opinions are my own.
