While I have read news stories and seen plenty of photos surrounding the various conflicts in the Middle East over the last decade, nothing gave me such a clear picture of what it is like to live in a war-torn land and occupied region like this book. It was incredibly immersive with the detailed depiction of every day life and the hardships suffered by regular citizens.
The characters and story, all based on real-life events, were rich and amusing, even in the face of such harrowing circumstances. And by telling this story from the viewpoint of multiple protagonists, a fully fleshed-out world was created with multiple dimensions from the differing life experiences of the characters based on wealth, occupation, religion, and family life.
I would highly recommend this book because it ultimately shows the commonalities between us all even when we're living worlds apart.
