When a war occurs you know there are going to be casualties: men, women, and even children. Lives are destroyed as well as cities and villages. What people do not usually think about is the impact war has on the animals that live in the area.

Father of Lions introduces the world to Abu Laith, whose name translates to "father of lions", a man who has loved animals his entire life and fought to keep his animals at the Mosul Zoo alive during a time of war.

At times heartbreaking, this real account of war and its unintended victims is a must read. The author, news journalist Louise Callaghan, does an amazing job of writing a nonfiction book that reads like fiction. At times I had to remind myself that the people involved and the events that happened are, in fact, very real.
