At first the story is a little confusing until you learn the main players. Names seem similar and each chapter is usually about another character.
This book is the true story of Abu Laith and his efforts to save the Mosul Zoo during the Iraq war. The sacrifices that he makes to save the lions is remarkable. He comes across as a little crazy but he finds help from a couple of other people who care about the animals as much as he does. It is heartbreaking when the animals slowly starve to death but heartwarming when Abu Laith makes a step forward trying to protect the lion that he loves so much.
The author does a great job of showing us the terrors of war and of the heroics of people living through the war. It reminds us how lucky we are to not have to live through a war on our on soil.
