The book quickly brings the reader into the action. We feel the pain and struggle of our narrator even before we know much about what has happened with her best friend.
We soon learn that she Ella is responsible for her friend's death. Or at least she believes that at this point. She still blames herself so strongly, she is turning her back on her own future. And, she fears every else also blames her.
We get the first inkling that there will be more between her and Sawyer, Hayley's boyfriend, though we are not sure what is going on with him.
There are other layers to the story that will, most likely, develop as the novel progresses.
The writing is well-done. The narrative moves alongs quickly, while revealing much information. With the chapters in the excerpt labeled with the name of the narrator, we can perhaps expect other chapters may have different narrators, though that remains to be seen.
The segment is certainly interesting enough to make one want to read more.
