Not unlike other previews of LaPlante's books, this one starts off the same way - overly, unnecessarily descriptive, stock dialogue and dropped into the middle of a situation that seems abrupt and unorganized. The book is supposed to be about Jane Tennison starting with a new squad - which she "does" - but the start is consumed by the squad she's joining being involved in a robbery. This leaves Jane reduced to the new girl, dressing pretty to impress the team and sitting in the backseat of a squad car holding on for dear life. I can't say that's a good start to a book that's supposed to be about a strong female character.
