I love intelligent writing and I love dark humor, and Compass is hitting that sweet spot for me. And the book isn't derivative -- I can't think of any other fiction that brings together the Arctic and Inuit peoples with historical adventures and post-colonial failure. Although we aren't intended to like the narrator, the narration itself is wry and interesting. I look forward to seeing the narrator get his come-uppance later in the book. Definitely will read and recommend.
