This turned out to be a fun series starter, with lots of magic and beasts and full of power plays.
I loved how the author duo make us feel as if no one knows the real truth of this world and it's history, and everyone is just going around trying to gain power because that's what they believe will give them their proper place in this world. As it's two authors, the two POVs we get are very distinct and I enjoyed getting to know both Darling and Talon.
Both of them are characters who will do anything to protect their families and it was very cool to see such common traits between them even when they are at odds with each other. But it's definitely Talon's brother who was very compelling because he has this sort of compulsive madness - making him seem both shrewd as well as unpredictable - and he always kept us readers on our toes.
Overall this was an enjoyable new YA adventure with some interesting characters and a thrilling cliffhanger ending, which will make you eagerly await the sequel.
