This is an awesome start to an original young adult book with excitement, fantasy, and a little bit of romance. I really wish there was a map at the beginning of the book because Pyrlanum is a very complex world with different regions and landscapes and it would be nice to get a clear picture of locations. That being said, the world building is spectacular. I love the political intrigue and strength of the Houses. I was so excited to be reading about Caspian after the prologue, so it was a little disappointing to not get any chapters from his point of view. Granted they would probably be rambling and mad, but I would love to read more about his emotions and motivations. He was truly a likable
character and added a lot of humor to the story. Talon on the other hand was very dry and naïve for a War Prince. I liked him better in scenes when it was him and Darling, but separately they were not as strong. Darling’s background is so interesting and I love how her book manifests. I’m looking forward to reading more about her. Some things that I didn’t like was the lag in the middle of the book and how easy it was to pick out the villains. When the company is on a traveling tour through the kingdoms I felt like it was rushed an glossed over for information and scenes that maybe weren’t as important. I also could see the villains and the betrayal very early on and it was very frustrating. I’m mad about the cliffhanger only because I’m very excited to know what happens! The empyreal storyline is going to be amazing. A real great start to this young adult series and a great read. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
