The opening of this book is bogged down by a verbose prologue, written in a very detached third-person style in a way that is probably intended to be mysterious but prevents you from being able to really connect with the story. Once the "regular" chapters begin and a first-person perspective is introduced, the characters begin to come to life and the pacing improves.
