Sometimes, the best that can be said about a retelling is that it makes one want to read (or reread) the original. In this case, that is merely the faintest praise I have for this delightful story. In truth, I hope that Julie Sonneborn will apply her talents to all of Austen's work, thereby providing us with a full complement of delightful, modern-yet-classic love stories. Sonneborn's prose reads effortlessly, as does her poking gentle fun at several of our current day "types," including the present fashion of literary "reboots," making this a true comedy of manners. By The Book stands on it own merits: even readers unfamiliar with Austen will find themselves lost in the struggles between Anne Corey and Adam Martinez, rooting for the couple to rediscover each other. While I received an Advanced Reader copy of this book, you can be sure I'll be first in line at the bookstore should the author publish another Austen "reboot."
