The English major in me fell in love with this book. I’m always a fan of updated Austen, and By the Book did not disappoint. This fresh take on Persuasion by Julia Sonneborn would be a great option for book clubs.
We get to watch as Anne Corey works to gain tenure, all while taking care of her father, pursuing a new love interest, and trying not to appear flustered by her college’s new wunderkid President, who just happens to be her ex-fiancé.
Knowing many people who have gone or are going through the fight for tenure in a publish or perish world, I enjoyed the exploration of campus life and internal politics as much as I did the will they?/won’t they? romantic tension between former lovers Anne and Adam.
