First off, the cover for this book is ever, colorful and fun. After reading the book, I believe that the description and comparisons to some movies are accurate. Overall, the book is witty and has many funny moments. As a person of color, the character, his family, and interactions with friends and in his community were relatable and easy to visualize. I do think that there was a little too much focus or emphasis on race even though that accounted for a big part of the book. It came off as overly done in a way and so much so that it became annoying. However, that said, I do understand why the author chose to do this and it did coincide with some of the overall points of the book. The mini tips to the reader within the book were sometimes funny and interesting, but there were also times when I mentally eye rolled and thought "great, another tip." Again, I know that was the gist of the book, but I personally become annoyed when authors overly do something in a story. I deducted from my overall rating because of these different things.
