People say we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but in this case, we definitely should. BLACK BUCK is a novel as amazing as its cover. Mateo Askaripour's writing pulled me right into the story and I found myself feeling so many emotions as I experienced everything with the main character, Darren, who goes from being a happy, well-loved employee at Starbucks to a ruthless salesman at a startup, where he is the only Black person on the team. But just when you're ready to hate this main character forever for how he treats his family and friends, he surprises you.
The combination of complex characters and an intense plot make this book very difficult to put down! I appreciate how Askaripour tackles issues of race and social justice in this novel in such a nuanced way--we see the effects of racism on not just a societal level, but a very personal level as well. And perhaps even more importantly, we are left feeling empowered and inspired by the characters to tackle the inequity of our world.
