Though I enjoyed this book, it was not a must read for me. Going in, I didn’t realize it was a satire, which definitely threw me off for a while. When the *big thing* happens that totally changes the course of the novel, I had to set it down and look it up to read the description a little better than I had the first time, as it was so out of left field and wild. I do think the story was well written and the characters felt fleshed out and real, but I don’t typically reach for satires and this book did not particularly change this aspect of me.
I enjoyed the book well enough and may recommend it every once in a while, but it isn’t a must-read for me. I will read the author’s sophomore novel to see how it stacks up, but it was a little too much like Version Zero by David Yoon, where the thing that comes out of left field is just a little too f**ked up for me to fully enjoy it.
